Water Sampling Information

Water Sampling Information for CVESD Schools

The District's 46 schools are served by four separate water utilities/agencies: California American Water (Cal Am), Otay Water District (Otay), San Diego Water Utility (SDW), and the Sweetwater Authority (SWA).

Background: Schools in other San Diego County districts have found lead in their water, at levels above 15 parts per billion (ppb), which can be harmful if ingested. This prompted state officials to require water agencies to sample schools for free when asked. In an abundance of caution, our school district asked our water agency partners to test for the presence of lead at our schools, as it is the right thing to do and negative results would provide our communities peace of mind. Because of the backlog of testing by the agencies, we contracted with a private water sampling company to sample for lead at eight of our oldest campuses.

Information to Share: We are pleased to report that no lead was detected from private water sampling at the first eight CVESD schools, our oldest campuses, and this was also confirmed at the first five of these sites that were sampled by the respective water utility/agency in those jurisdictions.

Please note that we have modernized our schools regularly over decades. When we undertake school modernization, the work includes replacement of water fixtures and piping. For example, some of the oldest schools in the District were gutted down to the studs during modernization, the piping was replaced, and new water fixtures were installed, among other upgrades. It is because of voter-approved school modernization efforts that we have been able to accomplish the work that needed to be done at our campuses. Our District thanks and commends the voters of our community for their support. In addition, credit goes to our Facilities and Maintenance staff, who have kept on top of necessary repairs and upgrades through the years.

Please view the following tables with information about testing by school site/water agency. Note that sampling and test results for schools within the Otay and Sweetwater water agencies will be published here as the results are known. Check back here for more updates.
