Priority Criteria for Student Placement

Students who live in a neighborhood school's attendance area receive priority of placement at their neighborhood school.

After children within each school’s attendance area have been accommodated, transfer requests will be honored according to the following criteria when classroom space is determined to be available:

1. Attendance area students.

2. Renewal intradistrict/zone transfer students.*

3. New intradistrict/zone transfer students who have attended the last two consecutive school years at the requested school.

4. New intradistrict/zone transfer requests from staff.

5. Renewal interdistrict transfer requests from staff.*

6. New intradistrict/zone transfer requests of siblings of current students.

7. New intradistrict/zone transfers.

8. Renewal interdistrict transfer requests.*

9. New interdistrict transfer requests from staff.

10. New interdistrict transfer requests of siblings of current students.

11. New interdistrict transfer requests.

*When completed within the parameters set on the registration timeline.

Due to continued growth in Chula Vista, NO new transfers will be approved for impacted eastern schools effective immediately.

Intradistrict / Zone Transfers

Once students have completed the enrollment process at their neighborhood school, parents/guardians may complete a District Zone Transfer form to apply to a different school within CVESD.

The neighborhood school will forward the Zone Transfer to the Student Placement Office for processing. Zone Transfer applications are processed based on the date of application. Families will be notified by mail regarding the outcome of the transfer. If the application is denied, the student will be placed on a wait list.

Renewal Zone Transfers are mailed by the Student Placement Office in February for the next school year. Applications must be submitted within the designated time indicated on the renewal instructions.

Zone Transfers are reviewed annually based on space availability and whether or not there are attendance and/or behavior issues per Administrative Regulation 5117.

There is no transportation provided for Zone Transfer students.

Interdistrict Transfers

Families living in other school district boundary areas may apply for their students to attend CVESD with a San Diego County Office of Education Interdistrict Transfer form. This is a district-to-district application and students may be placed at school locations other than preferences listed.

Interdistrict Transfer applications are initiated at the school district of residence and require their authorized signature. The complete application and any required documentation must be submitted to the Student Placement Office for processing.

Incoming interdistrict transfer applications for the upcoming school year are accepted on or after the first Monday in May, as long as the Interdistrict Agreement with the district of residence is in place.

  • New/Renewal interdistrict transfer applications received on or after the first Monday in May will be notified up to two weeks after the start of the new school year.
  • Parents/guardians need to enroll their children in the neighborhood school while the interdistrict transfer application is being processed.

Parents/guardians are notified by mail regarding the outcome of the transfer request.

No wait list is maintained for interdistrict transfer applications.

Interdistrict Transfers are reviewed annually based on space availability and whether or not there are attendance and/or behavior issues per Administrative Regulation 5117.

There is no transportation provided for Interdistrict Transfer students.

Overflow

Occasionally there are no classroom spaces available in the neighborhood school. When this occurs, the District may assign students to another school for the remainder of the year, or until space becomes available at the neighborhood school. The District generally provides transportation for overflow students, unless the placement is within walking distance. Parents are welcome to transport their student if this is preferred.

Verification of Attendance

Official verification of a current or former student's attendance in the Chula Vista Elementary School District may be obtained from the Student Placement office, located at the Education Services and Support Center, 84 East J St, Chula Vista, CA 91910.
