Lauren Shelton, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator, Chula Vista Elementary School District, was recently named the California Music Educators Association’s 2018 CMEA Outstanding Administrator for the Southern Border Section as well as the state of California. Shelton has been instrumental in carrying out the District’s VAPA initiative, which includes the hiring of approximately 80 VAPA teachers for in-school music instruction. The District’s VAPA program has attracted a host of high-profile collaborative partners, such as the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and Grammy Award-winning band Switchfoot, among others. In 2016, CVESD’s Board of Education was recognized by the California School Boards Association with a Golden Bell Award for excellence in VAPA.

Our collaboration with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory is recognized as a model arts partnership. The District and SDYS rebuilt the music education infrastructure and deepened the sustainability and capacity at our schools with a shared vision: The visual and performing arts reflect our belief that all children should Profile photo of VAPA Coordinator Lauren Sheltonhave access to challenging curriculum content, exhibit a high level of performance proficiency, and be prepared for the world of tomorrow.

Shelton credits a network of arts supporters, from Board members to classroom teachers, for the arts renaissance in Chula Vista schools.

“The work happening in Chula Vista continues to be recognized on so many different platforms,” Shelton said. “I am very proud to represent our District and the amazing work that we do not only in the arts, but for the whole child. … I don't know where I would be today without having music in my life growing up. I know our work isn't easy, but it's 100% worth it!”
