Feaster students use Apple devices to assist in their learning.

At Mae L. Feaster Charter School, students are bloggers, movie producers and advertising publishers. They create presentations using KeyNote, complete projects and access tutorials on iMovie, and compose background music for video productions using programs like GarageBand.

Feaster Charter in the Chula Vista Elementary School District was recently honored as an Apple Distinguished School. The Apple recognition for 2017–19 honors Feaster for its innovative use of iPad devices in kindergarten through eighth grade classrooms.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking, according to the company. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

"Technology is immersed throughout Feaster," said Francisco Velasco, Executive Director at Feaster Charter. “Our 1:1 program better supports student learning by providing oA Feaster Charter student with a headset uses an iPad to enhance his learning.pportunities to create, lead, and innovate. Teachers receive training to use devices so as not to replace paper, but to provide students with learning opportunities that would not be possible without technology.”

The Apple Distinguished School recognition highlights the school’s success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. At Feaster Charter, students are at the center of all decision making, Velasco said.

The teachers prepare them to become 21st century learners in a multicultural society by infusing Visual & Performing Arts as well as Science, Technology, Social Studies, Engineering & Mathematics into the daily curriculum and literacy instruction. By introducing the Arts and Sciences, students are developing their leadership and reasoning skills, as well as increasing their self-esteem, Velasco said.

“When students leave Feaster Charter School, they will be lifelong learners who are prepared to demonstrate grit and perseverance and celebrate their success,” Velasco said.

Students use their devices to complete a variety of innovative projects and assignments, including use of the Notes app to collaborate with team members, create digital media advertisements using Canva and Photoshop, and create blogs and vlogs.

At Feaster Charter, it is because of the continued dedication from the community that their vision for the future of their students can come to fruition. The community’s input and feedback on programs and opportunities have helped shape Feaster into a school that is continuously providing the best opportunities possible for every learner on campus, school officials said.
